Seven Mistakes Owners Make When Choosing a Driveway Quote
The most expensive mistake when choosing a driveway quote is comparing totals that describe different work. Close behind come using different square metres, ignoring IVA, and accepting a quote that paints over a problem it cannot solve.
Send us a photo and the m²Mistake 1: Are you comparing different square metres?
If one contractor measured 70 m² and another 85 m², the totals are not comparable. One of them may have included a side path or the steps; the other may not.
Ask every contractor to list each area with its m². Then compare the rate and the content, not the bottom line. Our measuring guide helps you check the figures yourself.
Mistake 2: Are you ignoring the number of coats?
A one-coat quote and a two-coat quote are two different jobs. On faded concrete, a single coat tends to leave the surface uneven and the colour shallow.
Our guide rate of approximately €15/m² + IVA always includes two coats of synthetic resin paint. If another quote does not say how many coats, ask before you compare.
Mistake 3: Have you checked whether cleaning and repairs are included?
Some quotes treat pressure washing or crack filling as optional extras. Others include them but describe them so vaguely that you cannot tell.

On a refresh, both are essential. Paint does not bond well to dirt, and unfilled cracks show through. The crack repair cost page explains what routine filling covers and what is assessed separately.
Mistake 4: Are you comparing prices with and without IVA?
A quote that says €1,000 and one that says €1,000 + IVA are €210 apart at the general rate. Always check whether the figure includes tax, and at which rate.
The reduced 10% rate for home renovation only applies when the legal conditions are met, and whether it covers driveways and patios has not been verified. Our IVA guide sets out what is known.
Mistake 5: Is the quote solving the right problem?
If your driveway is cracking because the ground is moving, any quote that offers only to fill and paint is solving the wrong problem. The cracks will come back, and you will pay twice.
A good contractor tells you when a refresh is not the answer. We do this from the photos, before any price is agreed, and we do not take on structural work.
Mistake 6: Have you asked what is excluded?
Exclusions matter as much as inclusions. Ask whether the quote covers steps, kerbs, edges around posts, and areas behind cars or furniture.
- Are parking lines included? We do not paint them, so plan a separate contractor if you need them.
- Is municipal paperwork included? It usually is not; check with your ayuntamiento.
- Are broken or sunken sections dealt with? A refresh will not fix them.
Owners who manage a villa from abroad are especially exposed here, because they cannot walk the driveway with the contractor. A written list of exclusions does that job for them, and it costs the contractor nothing to provide.
Mistake 7: Are you deciding without seeing finished work?
Photos of finished work, ideally with the stages in between, tell you more than any description. Ask every contractor for them.

Our Marbella reference job shows each stage from the faded start to the even, dark finish. It is not a testimonial; it is simply what the work looks like.
Look for photos of the stages, not only the finish. A picture of filled cracks or of edges being cut in by brush shows how the work is done, which a single glossy after-shot cannot.
How do you avoid all seven at once?
Ask every contractor for a written, itemised quote and compare them line by line. Our contractor checklist lists the questions in order.
To see our figure, use the quote calculator and send photos. For the logic behind the price, read the driveway painting cost page.
Keep the quotes and your notes together, especially if co-owners or a property manager are part of the decision. One shared comparison avoids the same questions being asked twice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest mistake when comparing driveway quotes?
Comparing totals without checking that the quotes describe the same work. Differences in the area measured, the number of coats and the preparation included explain most price gaps. Line the quotes up by stage and m² before deciding which is better value.
How do I check that the m² are the same?
Ask each contractor to list every area with its own m². If the figures differ, find out why: a side path, steps or an excluded bed are common reasons. Our measuring guide shows how to check the numbers yourself with a tape or an online map.
Why does the number of coats matter so much?
Because one coat on weathered concrete rarely gives an even, deep colour. The second coat evens out the tone and builds depth. A one-coat quote is a different job, so it cannot be compared directly with a two-coat quote.
Should cleaning be included in a painting quote?
Yes. Paint needs a clean, sound surface to bond to. If a quote lists cleaning as optional, ask what happens without it. With us, pressure washing is part of the guide rate of approximately €15/m² + IVA. Exceptional problems such as thick old paint are assessed from photos.
How much difference does IVA make?
At 21%, IVA adds €210 to every €1,000 before tax; at 10%, it adds €100. Make sure every quote you compare shows the same basis: either all before IVA or all including it, with the rate stated. On a larger driveway, that gap quickly runs into hundreds of euros.
How do I know if a quote is solving the wrong problem?
If your cracks keep widening, slabs have dropped or the surface moves under a car, the base may be the issue. A quote that only offers to fill and paint will not fix that. Ask the contractor what they think is causing the cracks.
What exclusions should I ask about?
Steps, kerbs, edges, areas under cars or furniture, parking lines, municipal paperwork and any broken or sunken sections. Knowing what is left out tells you what you may need to pay for separately, and it makes the comparison fair. Ask for the exclusions in writing.
Can I trust a quote given without photos?
A guide price without photos is a useful starting point, which is why we publish ours. A confirmed price should be based on seeing the surface, in photos or in person, because condition and access change the work involved. Without that, the figure is only an estimate.
Should I always choose the contractor with the best photos?
Photos show what a contractor can do, but they do not replace a clear quote. Use both: the photos tell you what the result looks like, and the itemised quote tells you what you will actually receive and pay for.
How can I compare your quote with others?
Our quotes list each area, the m², the rate, the stages included, the exclusions and the IVA line. Put another quote next to ours and compare row by row. Our contractor checklist gives you the questions to ask. Differences then become obvious at a glance.
